A range of epic and wonderful trail-related events happen in Taranaki every year. Come be part of the fun. Annual events are:
Tāpoi Taranaki Cycle Challenge
The legendary Tāpoi Taranaki Cycle Challenge kicks off in 2023 on 28 January and takes riders on a striking road race around Taranaki Maunga. The pillar event, Around the Mountain has 148km to tackle in one day. Looking for more? Check out the Pinnacle… 233km and over 3,200m of gain; this is arguably New Zealand’s toughest cycling event! There’s also a 74km shorter ride.
Oxfam Trail Walker
New Zealand’s largest team endurance event is taking place in Taranaki for three years from 2021 to 2023. Teams of four tackle either 100 kilometres in 36 hours or 50 kilometres in 18 hours to raise vital funds for Oxfam’s work fighting injustice and poverty. Oxfam Trailwalker is aimed at people aged 18-80 at all fitness levels, with everyone from trail-walking novices to pro-athletes taking part each year.
Taranaki off-road half marathon
This trail run event is held in mid January each year and offers a range of trail running events, including the half-marathon, a 10km and 5km run.
Taranaki Coastal Five
Experience a new spin on the classic marathon with the chance to finish a marathon event in 5 events over 2 days. Race one or race them all and become one of the first Coastal Five Marathon Legends at this event in New Plymouth, Taranaki. In 2022, the event is being held 19/20 November. There’s a half marathon, a 10km climb, a 5km run around the iconic Pukekura Park, 4.5km run around Lake Mangamahoe and the Devon Mile.
Pukeiti adventure trail run
A fun and physical adventure through the Pukeit rainforest held in February, suitable for a range of ages and fitness and levels. Distances include 3km, 6km and 13km.
Taranaki Adventure Races: 6 hours and 3 hours
In April each year, these adventure races are held approximately an hours drive from New Plymouth. Suitable for all adult ages and secondary school level, the main requirements are a reasonable level of fitness, the ability to ride a mountain bike, some navigation skill is an advantage and a sense of humour is a must!
