In Taranaki, we love trail running and there’s something for every type of runner.
Below are some recommendations from locals – from an easy 3km around a beautiful reserve close to the city, to 20km plus gnarly challenges.
There’s also a range of running events, including the Off-road Half Marathon in January, the Oxfam Trailwalker in March and the Around the Mountain relay in November. See our Events page for more information.
Some suggestions of great trail runs, all available on the Find my Adventure site:
- Short of time: Chose from a quick run around Pukekura Park in the middle of New Plymouth, the Ratapihipihi Scenic Reserve, just on the edge of town, or the 5km loop around Lake Mangamahoe
- A cruisey long flat run: Check out the the award-winning Coastal Walkway, showcasing beaches and impressive artwork, including the Te Rewa Rewa Bridge and Wind Wand
- A more gnarly long run? The Pouakai Circuit or White Cliffs Walkway are local favourites.
- Want a serious challenge: You could run up a dormant volcano with a challenging 1600m vertical climb to the peak and enjoy the spectacular and unique views around Taranaki Maunga, and potentially the summits of Mt. Ruapehu, Mt. Ngauruhoe and Mt. Tongariro in Tongariro National Park.
